Eudocimus ruber

Description

The scarlet ibis is native to South America. This striking resident bird has bright, orange-red plumage with black wing tips and a long, curved bill. This plumage is the same in both sexes. Scarlet ibises mainly find their food by touch, by pricking the long bill in the soft mud or swinging it back and forth through the water. Their food consists mainly of crabs, shrimp, scampi, shellfish and aquatic insects. Like the flamingo, the scarlet ibis owes its colour to its diet.
